As with most things, technology has changed the school library. But advocates say it is no less important in today’s paperless world.
“What I get asked is, ‘With all this technology, what do we need librarians for?’” said Eila Overcash, the teacher-librarian at Summit High School. “(Students can) Google, and they have at their fingers all the knowledge.”
That doesn’t mean it is all coming from reliable sources. Librarians help students find the most relevant information, and with so much to choose from, that is more important than ever.
It’s been a long week, working, homework, exams… Even though I work all weekend, I’m really pumped that it’s Friday!
I also wanted to say I just partnered with another blog (I’m an admin) and if you’re a writer, or interested in writing, you should check it out! http://fictionwriterblog.tumblr.com
As always, my ask box is open and you can submit library related posts as well.
Good morning! Earlier this week, my library tech customer service class had a guest speaker/presenter talk to us from the States. Alison Macrina is the founder of the Library Freedom Project and she spoke to us about the importance of privacy in libraries. She gave us a few really interesting resources to look at to help improve patron privacy, and I really recommend looking at their website, https://libraryfreedomproject.org for a bunch of different resources, workshops and classes.
Privacy, and the lack thereof, is a huge problem facing our libraries. I can’t tell you how many patrons have come up to my desk saying that they don’t want to use our computers or wireless because they felt their privacy could be easily breached. Up here in Canada, the issue of the lack of privacy is not as big of a problem as is the States, but with all of the problems facing us globally, it could become a more prevalent problem.
In Canada, we have the FOIP program (the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy http://www.servicealberta.ca/foip/) but we should always do as much as we can to protect the privacy and security of our patrons.
